BUILDING PERMIT: a permit issued and approved by a municipality to ensure that work conforms to code. (go here for more info) CHRISTY BOX: A prefabricated concrete lining used to reinforce collection wells. CLEAN OUT: A point of entry found at the head of each drain line designed to facilitate cleaning the system. COLLECTION WELL: A large well of adequate depth and diameter to handle moisture collected by the drainage system. (Also called a sump well) DOWNSPOUTS: One of the most common sources of excess moisture is downspout discharge. Often a solution can be as simple as cleaning gutters and redirecting flow away from the home. EFFLORESENCE: A white, sparkly, flaky substance present on the surface of concrete or brick caused by salt deposits left behind after moisture intrusion. HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE: The pressure created by the weight of water on the fluid below. FILTER FABRIC: A lining used in perforated systems to prevent clogs from dirt and other debris. PERFORATED PIPE: A rigid plastic pipe with holes drilled in it to collect ground water. RAT PROOFING: A rough layer of concrete laid over dirt. Often used to contain vapor related issues. STRIP DRAIN/CHANNEL DRAIN/AREA DRAIN: An open grated collection pipe that captures surface runoff. SUBTERRANEAN SEEPAGE: A common problem in this area, when pockets of ground water from naturally occuring sources lead to moisture intrusion. SUMP PUMP: A electrically powered pump that forces water through an exit line when topography does not allow for gravity to do the work. SURFACE RUNOFF: Excess moisture that is not absorbed by the earth. Hard surfaces such as driveways and roof tops contribute to the problem.Glossary of terms you may see in your proposal:
